Khloe Kardashian Says Being A 'Control Freak' At The Gym Helped Her Lose 40 Lbs. (2024)

Khloé Kardashian has lived in the public eye since practically forever, and she’s been open in the past about going on a weight loss journey after splitting from her ex-husband, Lamar Odom. Now, she’s sharing what she’s learned, as well as where she’s at now.

The 39-year-old reality star revealed on the latest episode of the podcast SHE MD that she’s “worked really hard, because I used to be overweight a lot of my life.” She added, “I've always been even chubby-like athletic. I've always played sports. I just was never in shape.”

Khloé said it took a lot of work to “retrain” the way she thinks about food, and she shared that she’s now in a healthy place with food. Here’s what she’s revealed about her journey.

Khloé lost 40 pounds after her divorce from Lamar Odom.

The Kardashians star went through a very public divorce from former NBA star Lamar Odom starting back in 2013, which sparked her weight loss journey.

She previously told InStyle, per People, that she started going to the gym because she “didn't really know what to do” after separating from Lamar. "Of course, in the beginning, you [have to] get over that hump of it being really hard and something so new for you," she shared. "But I felt so accomplished."

Khloé said she “cared so much” when she first started working out. “Maybe [it's] just being younger. I think you care about the scale. The scale effs with you. I don't even look at a scale anymore. I think it's really unhealthy. I haven't in years. They're just numbers,” she said.

"I'm sort of a control freak, but in life, we can't control everything," she said. "But the gym, what I put in it, I know I'm going to get out of it. And being a control freak— I'm proud of it—I love that I have that control."

She now works out five days a week.

Khloé shared her workout routine with sister Kourtney’s Kardashian’s Poosh website, explaining that she exercises Monday through Friday and takes the weekends off.

“Let me start by saying that no matter what time Khloé and I are working out, she’s always at the gym 30 minutes before to stretch and warm up, that way we really have a full hour of exercising together,” her trainer Joel Bouraima shared. “And yes, even when we start at 6 a.m., she’s in her gym at 5:30 a.m. stretched and ready for me.”

Khloé does a range of HIIT workouts under Bouraima’s direction, but she usually takes one day a week to do Pilates or basic cardio on her own. “I do cardiovascular intervals with weightlifting,” Khloé told SHE MD.

She’s 'trained' her brain out of her old cravings.

Khloé told SHE MD that she learned to change the way she views food.

“My thing is more the food because I have the determination,” she said. “So I had to retrain my mind as to what I could eat, what I couldn't eat.”

Khloé said she “did every diet under the sun when I was younger,” but that’s changed for her. “I'm in a good place body-wise that I like, I do sort of eat what I want, but because my brain is so trained, you don't even want half of the crap or junk,” she said. “Or if you do want something, like, pizza is my weakness.”

But Khloé said that she’s “in this different state of my mind” when it comes to food. “I'm never going to eat a full pizza, but it's retraining your brain,” she said. “If your brain isn't trained with your body, then you're not doing anything.”

She found it easier to shed baby weight after giving birth a second time.

Khloé also opened up about losing weight after having her daughter, True, in 2018. “I was 204 pounds when I delivered and I was like, ‘How am I going to do this again?’” she told SHE MD of losing the baby weight. “Because I took so many years to do it the first time.”

But Khloé said she realized she had “all the tools in my toolbox” to lose the weight.

“I knew what to do and I actually lost my pregnancy weight so much faster than I ever did my regular fat weight,” she said.
