Directions

You don't need to be a professional baker to have success with these cookie bars, but here are a few steps you'll want to be sure to follow to ensure they turn out perfectly.

STEP 1- CREAM BUTTER & SUGARS

Cream the softened butter and sugars for a few minutes until you get a mixture that looks like this. Make sure it's light and fluffy.

STEP 2- ADD DRY INGREDIENTS

Then add in the flour and dry ingredients and give it a good mix. Your dough should now look like this:

Hint: I never sift the flour and dry ingredients together first because that's just one extra bowl to clean. However, just make sure that you add the flour first, and then add the other dry ingredients onto the pile of flour. Stir quickly with a dry spoon to "sift" and then mix all together.

STEP 3- STIR IN CHOCOLATE CHIPS

Stir in the chocolate chips. There is no need to measure the amount of chocolate chips out. Just pour straight form the bag until you've added enough to your liking. I usually use about 2 cups.

This dough only takes about 5-7 minutes to make! Super fast and easy!

STEP 4- PLACE DOUGH IN PAN

With the dough all made, you're ready to bake! Spray your 9x13 pan pan with your favorite cooking spray. I use Vegalene cooking spray because it has less junk in it than typical spray. And the big can lasts forever.

Firmly press your dough into the pan so that the dough is evenly distributed. Sprinkle a few more chocolate chips on top for good measure!

Bake at 350 degrees F for 20-25 minutes. *See the FAQ for more details about this temperature and time!

FAQs

What chocolate is best for chocolate chip cookies? ›

Semisweet chocolate chips, which we have already briefly mentioned above, are one of the best options for chocolate chip cookies if you're after a more balanced sweetness. Thanks to their cocoa solid content of 35% to 65%, semisweet chocolate chips create a perfect contrast with sweet cookie dough.

Is milk or semi sweet chocolate chips better for cookies? ›

Semi-sweet chocolate, which is what the majority of recipes will call for, hovers around 50 to 60 percent cacao, meaning that while it is more complex than milk chocolate, it still errs on the sweeter side. Semisweet chocolate chips are a crowd-pleaser, especially if you are trying to cater to younger palates.

Why are my cookie bars hard? ›

Overmixing develops the gluten in the flour, which can produce tough bars. If the recipe doesn't call for an electric mixer, mix in dry ingredients using a wooden spoon. When flour or other dry ingredients are "scooped" into the measuring cup directly from the container, it compresses, or becomes packed.

Why do my homemade chocolate chip cookies get hard? ›

Cookies become hard when the moisture in them evaporates. This can be caused by leaving them out in the air for too long, baking them for too long, or storing them improperly. The lack of moisture makes the cookies hard and dry, which makes them difficult to enjoy.

What chocolate do professional bakers use? ›

Best Bittersweet / Semi-Sweet Chocolate

Can I use semi-sweet chocolate chips instead of milk chocolate chips? ›

Both semisweet and milk chocolate consist of chocolate plus sugar, vanilla, and emulsifiers to keep them in bar or block form. Any solid chocolate (bittersweet, semisweet, or milk) can generally be swapped in and out in equal quantities. Just be ready for a slight difference in flavor.

What is the difference between chocolate chips and morsels? ›

They are specifically made to keep their shape in the heat of the baking process. This is done by using waxes and other extra solidifying ingredients. Chocolate morsels, however, are more natural chocolate and will melt when baked.

How to tell when bar cookies are done? ›

For cake-like bars, test with a wooden pick inserted at the center of the pan. If it comes out with a few moist crumbs clinging to it, the cookies are done. Chewy (moister) bars will have a dull, rather than shiny, surface; a slight imprint will remain after touching the surface lightly with your fingertip.

How do you make cookie bars less cakey? ›

Too much flour or not enough moisture can result in dry and hard bars. How do you make cookie bars less cakey? Along with getting the ingredient ratios right, my secret to chewy, not cakey, cookie bars is adding cornstarch!

How to moisten cookie bars? ›

Simply lay the bread at the bottom of the container and pile your cookies on top of it, seal the lid, and wait a few hours. The cookies will soak up all the moisture from the bread and by the next morning, they will taste as good as the day they came out of the oven gooey.
