Baldur's Gate 3: 7 Worst Decisions You Can Make

Baldur's Gate 3 holds some truly terrible choices that the player can make, with these decisions forever altering the fate of the characters.

Thankfully, the game has a few inbuilt mechanics to help players manage their inventory in Baldur's Gate 3, including the ability to sort as well as a couple of ways to select or move multiple items at once.

Updated May 16, 2024, by Joe Grantham: Game of the Year winner Baldur's Gate 3 is now available on consoles as well as PC. When using a controller, many elements of the UI, including the inventory, work a little differently. Accordingly, these tips for BG3 inventory management have been updated for players using controllers. However, it should be noted that some features only work with a keyboard and mouse, and the dexterity of a mouse will always prevail when it comes to navigating a HUD.

10 Use Bags And Pouches

Put Groups Of Items Into Specific Bags

Baldur's Gate 3: 10 Inventory Management Tips (2)

BG3 has a fantastic built-in inventory management system, thanks to the use of bags, pouches, and even keychains. For example, all food will be sent to the camp supply bag, and all keys that are picked up will be placed on a keychain. This makes things much easier, especially as these items are used automatically.

However, players might not know that they can also pick up other bags and pouches and manually sort other item types into these. For example, players could store all their potions in one pouch, and place their arrows neatly into an extra backpack. This will make the inventory much more tidy, and allow players to find exactly what they want with more efficiency. Players could have a bag for quest items to ensure nothing important is lost, and they could also have a bag for books at camp in case they ever need to check something.

9 Sell Wares

Add Items To A List That Can Be Sold Quickly

Over the course of their adventures in Faerun, players will pick up a lot of rubbish that they will want to sell at the first opportunity. To make the process even faster, when players loot an item, instead of selecting the 'pick up' option, they can instead choose 'add to wares.' Alternatively, players can add items to their wares from their inventory.

Then, when players come across a trader, they can simply switch from Barter to Trade. At the bottom is a button labeled 'Sell Wares.' Instead of wasting time selling each item individually, players will get rid of all their chosen loot in one swift action.

8 Sort By

Order Items By Latest, Value, Weight, & Type

Baldur's Gate 3: 10 Inventory Management Tips (4)
  • PC: Left-Click the Sort By button next to the search bar.
  • Controller: Press Left Stick to bring up filters.

The Sort By button to the left of the search bar is perhaps the greatest asset when it comes to inventory management in BG3 as it will organize items in any way desired. The four options are Latest, Value, Weight, and Type. Sorting by Latest is great for when players pick up something new, but can't find it, or if they pick up multiple items at once and wish to check everything out.

If you want a unique playthrough of Baldur's Gate 3, these party set-ups will do the trick.

Value is naturally great if a player needs to make some money quickly by selling, and the same goes for sorting by Weight when a player is encumbered and needs to ditch their heaviest items. Sorting by Type will likely be the default, as this organizes the inventory most coherently. The search bar is equally useful and can narrow things down further or be used to search for specific great items in Baldur's Gate 3. On a controller, pressing the Left Stick brings up filters.

7 Select Multiple Items At Once

Save Time By Managing Specific Items At Once

Baldur's Gate 3: 10 Inventory Management Tips (6)
  • PC: Left Ctrl and Left Click
  • Controller: Right Trigger

Picking out multiple items no matter their location in the inventory is something that both PC and console players can do. PC players just have to hold down Left Ctrl while Left Clicking on all the items they want to select, and then they can drag these to another character's inventory or Right Click to bring up options.

Console players arguably have it easier, just having to click the Right Trigger on the items they want to select. Xbox players can then press X and PlayStation players Square to bring up the options. An example of how this can be useful is if players want to transfer all the best scrolls to their wizard, so they can learn the spells permanently.

6 Select Rows At Once

Save Time By Managing Long Rows Of Items At Once

Baldur's Gate 3: 10 Inventory Management Tips (7)
  • PC: Left Shift and Left Click on the first and last items.
  • Console: Hold the Right Trigger and scroll with the Left Stick.

Often, players will want to select or move multiple items at once as this can save lots of time. To move rows of items that are all next to each other, PC players can press Left Shift while Left-Clicking on the first item they wish to select, and then do the same on the last item. This will select all the items in between, which can then be dragged or Right-Clicked to bring up options.

This is particularly useful when players have sorted their inventories well, as items are more likely to be in rows that players want to select. Console players can similarly select long rows of items at once by holding down the Right Trigger and scrolling along the desired row with the Left Stick.

5 Split Stacks

Choose How Many Consumables To Give To A Character

  • PC: Press Left Shift while dragging stacks

Certain items in Baldur's Gate 3, such as potions and gold, can stack on top of each other. But in co-op mode especially, players might wish to split these stacks to divide their spoils of war equally.

Some races may get less attention from players in Baldur's Gate 3 than others, but they offer a lot to players who choose them.

To do this on PC, players can either Right Click to bring up options and select Split, or they can press Left Shift while dragging the stack to another character's inventory. Either of these will bring up a slider to determine the split.

Wizards Can Learn These Spells & Free Up Inventory Space

Baldur's Gate 3: 10 Inventory Management Tips (10)

There are many items that clog up the inventory in Baldur's Gate 3, and among these are scrolls. Thankfully, there is an easy and useful way to deal with these scrolls. If players have a Wizard in their party, such as Gale, they can send the scrolls to the Wizard who can permanently learn the spells, instead of consuming the scroll for a one-off use

Although it costs gold to learn spells, only high-level spells are expensive, and even then certain spells have their cost cut in half depending on the Wizard subclass. On top of emptying the inventory, once spells have been learned, Wizards are able to unlock other spells when they level up.

3 Toggle Camp Clothes And Helmet Visibility

Choose The Character's Appearance Without Removing Armor

Baldur's Gate 3: 10 Inventory Management Tips (11)
  • PC: Left Click the boxes.
  • Controller: Press Y or Triangle when hovering over equipment.

While Baldur's Gate 3 doesn't have a fully transmog system, it does allow players to toggle their camp clothes on and off, while still keeping their armor and gear equipped. For PC players, this can be done by clicking a box above the camp clothes.

However, there is another hidden box above the helmet slot that will appear when hovered over. This box has three options, show helmet, hide helmet, and hide during dialogues. This is a great option for players who want to see the beautiful hero they made in character creation, while still gaining the benefits of wearing a helmet. Players using controllers can also do this by hovering over their equipment and pressing Y or Triangle.

2 Inspect

Learn Key Information About Items

Baldur's Gate 3: 10 Inventory Management Tips (12)
  • PC: Press T.
  • Controller: Press the Right Trigger to toggle information.

The Inspect option is not only great in the inventory but in all areas of the game, such as while hovering over a character to see all their stats and details. To inspect anything on PC, simply press T, and to inspect inventory items on any controller there is a prompt to Inspect when hovering over any item.

1 Click On Equipment Slots

View All Items That Can Be Equipped

Baldur's Gate 3: 10 Inventory Management Tips (14)

One of the easiest tips for better inventory management in Baldur's Gate 3 is to simply click on an equipment or gear slot, such as the armor slot, which will then bring up all the owned armor pieces. This prevents players from having to meticulously search through their overloaded inventories trying to find armor pieces, wasting time and potentially missing some.

While most players have likely figured this one out, it is an absolute godsend, and will also bring up items currently owned by companions, with anything they currently have equipped marked. This feature can be particularly useful for selecting a melee weapon, as many surprising objects can be equipped.
